I think its because the whole family unit in the US is even more screwed than the rest of the world!
Maybe they think they are being clever and thought provoking or something.
I have to say for about 3/4 of the film i was glued to the screen, and i loved the noise the tripods made, really made you think "oh ****!" for the most part it had really great suspense and tension, with some quite memorable images/scenes. Shame that some poor parts of the film drag it down.

I must say i adore the musical. so many varied choices for vocalists but they all work so well. And you have GOT to love phil lynott as the parson.
They are (or have by now probably) staging another musical live show in london. I wanted to go but i HATE wembley with a burning passion.

"Million Dollar Babe" is well worth watching. I was disappointed with "The Aviator" (stopped the DVD after 15 mins), but the other winner of last years Oscars is actually an outstanding movie. Clint Eastwood did an amazing job as director and actor. Hilary Swank deserved her "Best Actress" Oscar. Her performance was amazing and moving.
Yep, the bad guy, ehrm gurl was German (which casts a bad light on R.Halmig to a certain extend and was not one of the wisest choices of the writer), but fortunately neither the career nor the fights were really focussed on.
The emotional impact of "Million Dollar Babe"doesn't happen in the ring, but behind it, backstage. Just don't expect a "Rocky" flick, MDB is not about the action, but its consequences.

Interesting, i had heard of the film but not being a boxing fan or indeed a clint eastwood fan steared well clear. But your description intrigues me. Sounds interesting.

This week i would just like to say how greatGrave of firelies is. Some very harsh and emotional animie. I must admit i had a few tears forming, It is basicaly a tale of 2 japanease children during WW2 and the american bombings of Japan. Like i said a very powerful film and really helps to prove to the idiots that just because its a cartoon it doesnt mean its childish!
Im sure i dont have to tell any of you guys that tho huh? Cool

Indeed, Grave of Fireflies is one of the best movies i've ever seen. Seriously heavy stuff. This one is definitely NOT meant to entertain.

Shame on me, how could I not mention 'Grave of the Fireflies', the single most moving picture in the history of cinema. Seriously, this movie is an emotional tour de force, don't watch it if you don't feel ok in your real live.

Ive brought a inordinate amount of DVDs over the last month or so. It would take me a long time to reca but i shall try and bring you a few high lights i would recomend, are you sitting confortably? then i shall begin......

First up a brit slasher film whihc rises above its station. CREEP. a good film staring Franka Potente. NOt to be taken too seriously (it is a low ish budget horror film after all) its baout a girl who falls asleep in a tube station and wakes up to find it empty. Lots of blood and gore ensures basicaly. Good gory slasher if you are in to that, that is Big Grin

Deathwatch - Another brit film (dont let that put you off! hahaha) set in a trench on the front lines of WW1. A broken english unit stumble across a german trench with only a few survivours in it. They proceed to secure the trench and await re enforcements. Shortly after strange events begin to unfold. A clever and suspensful film that looks stunningly good. Very dark and moody with a very real sense of dread.

Hellraiser Deader & hellworld (7 and 8 respectivly)
Anyone who is a fan of pin head and co will already have seen these, but i was late on the up take here. Deader was another script which was taken and made to be a hellraiser script. BUt for me was not a problem it was dark, brooding and had some great bits in it, also a good amount of gore Big Grin (doug bradley as always was perfect) Hellworld was somewhat of a disapointment for me.It seemed to have a more "scream" way of doing things and seemed a bit of a waste of the franchise. Not bad as such but after some promising bits went downhill.

I have many many more of late but will try not to bore you all further.

"Deathwatch" is a very good movie. I watched it ~12 months ago in a single session with "The Lost Batallion"; Both are WW1 movies, both released roughly around the same time.
Guess which one came out tops ... frankly, I've had it with so called "historically correct/inspired/related" films from Hollywood. Lost Batallion is almost unbearable to watch; a real mess.

Deathwatch would also work in a theatre. They could've used the sets from "Blackadder goes forth" and still do the movie. And that commands respect for the screenwriter.

DVD players are dirt cheap these days. Also so are the DVDs, well they are cheaper than VHS anyway, not that you can really find VHS in this country any more. Well worth the investment.
Plus i am very anal about sound quality and most DVDs give you the option of glorious 5.1 surround sound, i paid alot of money for my stereo/DVD set up (amp, speakers, players etc) so i get alot of enjoyment out of it.
Just wish more music would take advantage of 5.1 Frown

btw counting down for Monster dog to come out in the UK (its a very dodgy horror film staring the one and only alice cooper) commigno ut on my birthday as well! hehehe Big Grin

Stay

Starring Ewan Mc Gregor, this Psychological Thriller has more than meets the eye. And boy, your eyes will be delighted with the magnificent photography and some special effects (particularly those at the last scenes). There's a great mystery, excellent acting, even heartbreaking moments. This is my current favorite movie.

looks like a bunch of madmen! hahaha im interested tho... might look into it further.....

as for stay i hadnt previously heard of it, but on looking is directed by the guy who did monsters ball (which was great) so i am interested, the story sounds pretty cool. I will keep my eyes peeled for it i think.

Also id recomend "the butterfly effect" The guy in the lead Ashton Kutcher is more known for comedy (i dont like his other movies) but he is very good in this.he wants to free himself from his disturbing childhood memories. As a kid, he often blacked out for long periods of time and tried to detail his life in a journal. As a young adult, he revisits the journal entries to figure out the truth about his troubled childhood, he soon finds out he can travel back in time by focusing on these entries and can change it, but as he does so the whole future changes (hence the name) with disasterous results.. Its very cool and quite harsh in places. Its out on budget so well worth a look if u see it around cheap.

heh, comeon, pay the 30 bucks and listen to the other guys posting b4 me...

And watch "Grizzly Man" by Herzog. This movie is just plain strange. It is not *really* a documentary, it's not a 'mockumentary'... Is it a homage? Don't think so...

Obviously, the movie is scriptet to some extent and the narrator (Herzog) should have taken some lessons in English pronunciation;
nevertheless "Grizzly Man" has some kind of power I couldn't pin down...

if its anything like the UK u may have to wait a looooong time hahaha.
God the U.K. sucks sometimes.

I think my fave movie this week would have to be the secretary staring james spader and the lovely Maggie Gyllenhaal. Gyllenhaal plays Lee, a nervous girl who compulsively cuts herself, but who then gets a job as a secretary for Edward, an imperious lawyer (James Spader, an old hand at tales of perverse affection). Edward's reprimands for typos and spelling errors begin with mild humiliation, but as Lee responds to his orders--which are driven as much by his own anxieties and fears as any sense of order--the punishments escalate to spankings, shackles and more.
Alot of people critisise this film for issues of stereotypical gender roles, but the film does not presume to make generalizations. Instead, it speaks specifically of the circumstances within one unique relationship. Taking metaphor to the extreme, Secretary allows access to the laughter and the pain of love in raw form.
Worth a watch if you fancy something a bit different.

well, i guess this week it's "Boogie nights" with MArk Wahlberg and Burt Reynolds.

IMDB says:
Eddie Adams, a young man working in a night club, is discovered by porn director Jack Horner, who soon puts Eddie, renamed Dirk Diggler, and his "talent" on the top of the porn industry. But when the 80s arrive, Dirk and his colleagues in the porn industry have to cope with a new era, as well as the baggage they bring with them from the 70s.
