Movie Of The Week Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Post Report Post to a Moderator       IP Information Go to the top of this page

Well ladies un gentlemen i thought id throw this out there.
What is the best film you have watched this week, it could be old, new, dvd cinema etc. Common lets hear about what your watching people.

Well yesterday i watched

Machinist - stars christian bale.
Its a psychological thriller about a guy who hasnt slept for a year and when he's involved in an accident at work, his co-workers turn against him. He starts to find strange notes in his apartment and see people that apparently aren't there....

A pretty good film. Well shot and some amazing acting. The music is not too great, a bit too hammy for my taste. Christian Bale really excelled. He lost 1/3 of his body weight 63 pounds for the film! The film is entertaining but never fully realises its potential for me. Well worth a try tho if u like dark claustrophobic films. id give it a 7/10

I'd give it a 9/10. I really liked almost everything. Even the music, which was composed by a Spanish guy who used theremin and other 60's instruments to add the eerie feeling. The colors and the whole atmosphere are enticing. Great movie.

What's hammy?

I just thought that they over played the "tense" moments too much. The music for the most part was ok it was just the more tense moments felt a bit "hammy" hahaha i dont know how else to say it.

Do you know the old classic w/ Gene Wilder? I thought the scenery looked a little familar, and I was right: It was produced and filmed near Munich/München!

Hey that rocks! i didnt know that.

My fave film this week (and one of my all time faves)
is ....

Before Sunset. - Stars Ethan Hawke & Julie Delpy
This is a romantic drama, a sequel to Before Sunrise (1995). Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) were strangers who spent a loquacious night together in Vienna. Nine years later, Jesse has written a book about the encounter. During his accelerated European book tour, he reunites with Celine in Paris. Before Jesse's flight home, he joins Celine for a picturesque walk around Paris peppered with intimate conversation

This is a stunning film about the connections that are forged between people. Over the course of about 85 minutes presented in real time Both characters reveal huge amounts about themselves with amazing dialouge that sparkles and shines with inteligence and realism. The acting is astounding and the direction is spot on.
What little music there is is mostly by the leading lady Julie Delpy and is also outstanding. (id recomend her album)
Both characters are two living, breathing three-dimensional people, and their specificity which is hightened by the real time nature of the film lets you feel really close to the both of them.

A truly stunning film and a real breath of fresh air.

Haven't seen Machinist yet, but I saw two other films featuring Christian Bale. That were Equilibrium and Batman Begins. I liked them both.

Equilibrium is fiction. Mankind invented some serum that killed every human thing in men - all kinds of feelings like love, hate, pain, etc. People became like robots, but there were no wars and economic problems in the whole world anymore. There existed a special organization, which destroyed pets, everything that had colour and everything connected with art. They also executed people, who didn't take serum (medicine), and who was able to feel. The world was just black & white! The leader of the whole world was some man like Stalin or Hitler. One of the best warriors of the organization was Christian Bale. So one day he didn't take serum and he began to FEEL, like a real human. Guess what happened then Smile
I think there's no need to tell you about Batman, 'cause evyryone knows about him. The only thing I can tell is that this is completely different from previous versions. And that's not prequel, it's remake.
I also saw Charlie and chocolate factory and liked it. Tim Burton created a special real atmosphere, and you really believe in this tale (btw, Tim made first two version of classic Batman).
Another good movie I saw was The Island. The story is a little similar to the Matrix. If you like it, I think The Island is for you

Yeah i havent seen the island yet but i intend to at some point.

My fave film this week is without a doubt
Sin City. Staring Bruce willis

This film adaptation of the much loved comics by Frank Miller (of which i am a fan) shows digital filmaking evoling in a way which i would never have thought of. The almost complete CGI sets and stark black and white color (along with red, yellow highlights) really capture the film noir, pulp fiction style of the classic comics
The film is so full of gleeful graphic violence and raw, steaming sexuality that it is the first film for a long time that can truly excite and provoke. Additionally, the direct translation is both exciting and a bit jarring, lending an unusual pace that you don't see in modern cinema. While this is not a perfect adaptation of the books (ive yet to see anythign that has been) It is a deligtful romp into Mr. Millers twisted little city.
Well worth a watch and if your like me, a purchase of the rather tasty limited edition box from amazon.
bring it on Big Grin

The Constant Gardener

With Ralph Fiennes in what is probably his best role as the husband of an activist who is murdered in Africa by her lover. As Fiennes' character investigates, he finds out much more horrible things that torment him deeper.

The movie show us how much he loved her. Indeed, it's a love story in dark times. A marvelous film. Probably my favorite this year.

Btw, I just watched "The Descent", an English made flick which is quite awsome. Take a couple of unexpected jumps, a clever setting and an open ending (where you can use your imagination to make sense of the whole affair); the result is one of the best suspense/horror movies of the year. Highly recommendable!

Ive wanted to watch decent for a while now, my girlfriend raved about it when she saw it so im looking forward to watching it.

How did everyone geton with the new war of the worlds?
Personnaly (being afan of the book since i was knee high to a grass hopper, and having it scare the crap out of me) i liked the new film for the most part. Why they changed lots of the story i dont know. Why were they buired? that makes NO sense, looked great tho, hahaha. And why did spielberg have to whimp out at the end? there is no way that kid survived that firefight! NO WAY! i loved the look of the tripods and for the most part really captured the sense of helplessness the book offered.
No quite a classic but not the stinker i feared Big Grin

UUUULLLLAAAA! Wawawawawawawawawawawawawawah-choing! wa-wa choingchoing!

One of my favorite albums since I was 18 Cool

The sound engineer who accompanied Amorphis for the time of our European tour once mixed a couple of shows of the musical version of "War of the Worlds". Sadly, this production was exclusively staged in Britain Frown

Okay, I read the book ~10 years ago, and quite frankly, I cannot remember much of it (the musical version stuck, though ...).
I guess I'm going to read it a second time (I probably couldn't relate so much 'cause it was set in late Victorian/early post-Victorian times)

Nevertheless, I quite enjoyed the Spielberg interpretation of the story. Not a classic, but a solid efford to keep the audience glued to the screen. And most of the time it worked for me. I had my doubts when I learned that the script would contain the one-millionth version of a father-son conflict (Jeez, is it such a big problem in the US??? I don't get why the same pseudo-confict has to appear in virtually every Hollywood based flick...) But I was positively surprised by the movie.
I was prepared for the worst. Cool
