Haven't seen Machinist yet, but I saw two other films featuring Christian Bale. That were Equilibrium and Batman Begins. I liked them both.
Equilibrium is fiction. Mankind invented some serum that killed every human thing in men - all kinds of feelings like love, hate, pain, etc. People became like robots, but there were no wars and economic problems in the whole world anymore. There existed a special organization, which destroyed pets, everything that had colour and everything connected with art. They also executed people, who didn't take serum (medicine), and who was able to feel. The world was just black & white! The leader of the whole world was some man like Stalin or Hitler. One of the best warriors of the organization was Christian Bale. So one day he didn't take serum and he began to FEEL, like a real human. Guess what happened then
I think there's no need to tell you about Batman, 'cause evyryone knows about him. The only thing I can tell is that this is completely different from previous versions. And that's not prequel, it's remake.
I also saw Charlie and chocolate factory and liked it. Tim Burton created a special real atmosphere, and you really believe in this tale (btw, Tim made first two version of classic Batman).
Another good movie I saw was The Island. The story is a little similar to the Matrix. If you like it, I think The Island is for you

How did everyone geton with the new war of the worlds?
Personnaly (being afan of the book since i was knee high to a grass hopper, and having it scare the crap out of me) i liked the new film for the most part. Why they changed lots of the story i dont know. Why were they buired? that makes NO sense, looked great tho, hahaha. And why did spielberg have to whimp out at the end? there is no way that kid survived that firefight! NO WAY! i loved the look of the tripods and for the most part really captured the sense of helplessness the book offered.
No quite a classic but not the stinker i feared |

Okay, I read the book ~10 years ago, and quite frankly, I cannot remember much of it (the musical version stuck, though ...).
I guess I'm going to read it a second time (I probably couldn't relate so much 'cause it was set in late Victorian/early post-Victorian times)
Nevertheless, I quite enjoyed the Spielberg interpretation of the story. Not a classic, but a solid efford to keep the audience glued to the screen. And most of the time it worked for me. I had my doubts when I learned that the script would contain the one-millionth version of a father-son conflict (Jeez, is it such a big problem in the US??? I don't get why the same pseudo-confict has to appear in virtually every Hollywood based flick...) But I was positively surprised by the movie.
I was prepared for the worst.
